Temptation and Protection of a Family

Genesis 3:1-24 Lesson 2

Human beings are God’s masterpiece of his creation. A family was his best plan for his joy. God established the first marriage and family in the Garden of Joy.

But, Satan was jealous and tried to destroy God’s joy by destroying his first family. Satan’s purpose was to destroy a good relationship with God and the men.

  1. Look at verses 1-5. Who is the serpent? (Rev 12:7-9, Jude 6, Jn 8:44, Jn10:10) How did Satan tempt the woman? Why?

The serpent was the personified Satan. Satan was the fallen angel who came down to lead the world astray.----he is the murderer and liar. Satan is a liar and tempter.

Satan tempted the woman to doubt... doubt about God’s love. Satan tempted the woman to focus on one thing among many things in the Garden, which the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil.

She began to doubt about God’s absolute love and sovereignty. When she began to doubt, she began to lie....

Satan’s purpose was to destroy all the relationships between God and men, man and woman.

  1. Look at verses 6-10. What was the result of their falling into the temptation? Why did God call the men? (9)

Their eyes were opened to see evil. They did not become God, but slave to Satan.

Fear, guilt, started in their heart. They began to hide themselves. They began to blame each other.

God called them, “Where are you?” in order to help them to realize themselves as sinners. God helped them to repent and appear in the presence of God as they are, not hiding themselves behind the tree.

Don’t hide, but reveal your suffering, your thought.

  1. Look at verses 11-19. How did the men make excuses? How did God punish the serpent, the woman, and the man?

The man shifted the responsibility to the woman and God. The woman shifted the responsibility to the serpent. No one confessed their sins and asked forgiveness of sin. No one became honest before God.

God punished the serpent.

God punished the woman---child-bearing---birth pain....with cursed desire for her husband.

God punished the man---cursed the ground. … produce thorns and thistles, sweat of brow, toils. return to dust of the ground.

  1. Look at verse 15. What was God’s plan for salvation and restoration for sinners? Look at verse 20. What did Adam do for his wife? (20) Why is this important in their relationships?

“He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” (15) God will send a Savior from children of women. The Savior is Jesus Christ who died for our sins, but rose again from the dead. God wanted to protect the family.

Adam named his wife... Adam restored his relationship with God by obeying his command, by naming his wife.

Adam restored his relationship with his wife as the head of his family. God put the woman under her husband. God established the spiritual order in the family.

  1. Look at verses 21-24. How did God protect the couple? How can we overcome Satan’s temptation and protect our family in this sinful and adulterous generation?

God killed an animal and covered the man and woman’s nakedness by the animal’s skin. This means God covered men’s sin by the blood of Jesus.

God banished the couple from the Garden of Eden, still God protected, preserved the tree of life for our happiness.

We must believe God’s absolute love and obey his words. Trust and obey. Who can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord... (Ro 8:35)
