God’s Covenant with Noah

(New Beginning) Lesson 7

Genesis 8:1-11:9

Key Verse: 9:9 “Now I establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you.”

God judged the world because of the fulness of men’s sin. But God reserved this world through Noah’s family. God started new beginning with new order with Noah’s family. Still, men’s sin problem was not solved. This made God find new solution for men’s salvation.

  1. Read 8:1-14. What did God do when he remembered Noah? How did God use him to save a remnant? Read 8:15-22. What did Noah do when he came out of the ark? Why? Was man’s sin problem solved?

  1. God receded water and dried the land.

  2. God used Noah to build an ark so that all his family members and animals could be saved. The importance of a man of faith and obedience to save the whole world. Jesus’ obedience to God’s will saved the whole world.

  3. Noah offered sacrifice as the expression of gratitude and thanks.

  4. Even though Noah and his family was saved, man’s sin problem remained. This is because they inherited Adam’s sinful nature.

Verse 22: God will restore his blessing on this earth: four seasons, fruit-bearing, …

  1. Read 9:1-17. How did God bless mankind? What did he teach about the preciousness of life? What was the covenant and its sign? Read 9:18-27. How did Noah teach his sons the importance of spiritual order? Describe Noah’s descendants and how they spread. (10:1-32)

  1. God started new beginning with new order. God commanded him to become fruitful and increase in number. Noah will rule over the world with fear and dread.

  2. God allowed men to eat meat, but not with its blood because blood represents life.

God forbid murder because all men have the image of God.

  3. God established a covenant with Noah which is that he will not destroy the world with water again.

God set a rainbow as the sign of his covenant. Whenever rainbow appears, God remembers the covenant with Noah and will not destroy this world.

The Lord judges and the Lord saves.

  4. God is God of order. God set order in a family. When men break the order of God, they will be punished. Even though Noah made a mistake before his sons, God stood on the side of Noah, not on his sons.

We should not judge or criticize God’s servant. Mt 7:1 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.” Ro 14:10. “You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister?”

Romans 14:4: Who are you to judge someone else’s servant?

  5. Noah’s three sons: Shem, Ham, Japheth. Ham, the father of Canaan saw Noah’s nakedness and mocked him. Shem and Japheth covered his father’s shortcomings. God blessed Shem and Japheth, but cursed Ham.

The descendants of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Canaan, Babylon, Uruk, Nineveh,

    Sodom and Gomorrah…

The descendants of Shem:.. Eber: One was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided…

  1. Read 11:1-9. Why did people build the Tower of Babel? What did God do the people who were building the tower, and why? Why did he want them scattered? What can we learn from these chapters about the consequences and spread of sin?

  1. 11:4, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

  2. 11:6-7. “The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”

Psalm 2:1-5: Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain?

Psalm 127: Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain…

God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble (Pr 3:34, 1 Pe 5:5)

    Romans 1:21-22.

While Noah built an altar, people built the tower, which symbolizes human pride.

  3. Sin spread to the whole world. Even though God saved the world through Noah’s faith, the ark of Salvation, sin remained in men’s hearts and spread like COVID-19, which kill people on this earth.
