The Memorial Stones

Joshua 4:1-24

Key Verse: 4:7b

1. Look at verses 1-7. What was God’s command to Joshua after the Israelites crossed over the Jordan? Why did the twelve men from each of the tribes pick up stones in the middle of the river? What does it mean that the stones would become a memorial to them forever? (7, Ge 28:18-22,  31:45-47, 1 Sa 7:12)

2. Look at verses 8-13. How did the twelve men respond to Joshua’s command? How difficult might it have been for the priests to obey his command? (10) What does it mean that they stood in the middle of the river until the people completed crossing over it?

3. Look at verses 14-18. How did God exalt Joshua before the Israelites? (14, 3:7, Ex 14:31) What is the significance of their entering the Promised Land? (Deut 28:1)What happened when the priests crossed over the river?(18)

4. Look at verses 19-24.Where did Joshua set the twelve stones? What was his speech at the memorial ceremony? What is the purpose of his setting up the twelve stones? (21,24)  Do you have your own memorial stones?
