THE CREATION OF MEN

Genesis 1:26-2:7   Lesson 2

Key Verse: 1:27   27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

1. Read verses 26, 27. What do these 2 verses teach us about God and his plan for mankind? (See Ps 139:13-16; Ps 8:1-9) What does it mean that God created mankind in his own image? (What are some of the God-like attributes we can find in man?)

26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

  A. Two plans for men: 1. make man in our image and likeness

2. make them rule over the world=manager, stewards for all God’s creatures.

B. God is holy. Holy means different, men are different from animals.

  God is spirit. Men are spiritual beings, who have fellowship with God.

  God is creative,

  God is love, righteous, faithful, compassionate…

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory
in the heavens.
Through the praise of children and infants

you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens,

the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,

which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,

human beings that you care for them?[c]

You have made them[d] a little lower than the angels[e]
and crowned them[f] with glory and honor.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands;

you put everything under their[g] feet:
all flocks and herds,

and the animals of the wild,
the birds in the sky,

and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

2. Read verse 28. How did God bless man and woman? (28) How does this command establish creation order and give meaning and direction to mankind? Think about the fact that God created man for mission.

28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

God gave men mission:1. Be fruitful and increase in number---produce many godly descendants…

2. Rule over the world----be manager and steward of God’s creatures.

Man=mission. Mission=man.  Man without mission is directionless.

This command established the creation order: God first, men second, and the world third.  Men are happy when this creation order is kept.

3. Read verses 29-31. How did God provide for the physical needs of mankind doing God's work (Mt 6:33)? How should man respond to God's gracious gift? (Ps 104:14,27, 31,33) What was God’s testimony after creating all things? (31, Eph 2:10)

29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.

31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

God provided food when men is faithful to his mission. We don’t worry about what to eat and what to wear.

Men should be thankful for God’s provision. But many lost their gratitude, taking all for granted---ingratitude is the root of all sin.

God’s joy is completed when he finished the creation of men. The creation of men is the crown of God’s creation.

Therefore, each person is very important and precious existence before God’s eyes.

14 He makes grass grow for the cattle,
and plants for people to cultivate—
bringing forth food from the earth:

All creatures look to you
to give them their food at the proper time.

31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever;
may the Lord rejoice in his works—

33 I will sing to the Lord all my life;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

4. Read 2:1-3. What did God do on the 7th day? Why does he want us to keep the Sabbath day holy? (Ex 20:8, Mt 11:28-29) Read 2:4-7. What does it mean that God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life? (7) What is the source of human value?

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

God took rest.  The word, ‘Sabbath’ means ‘rest’  This does not mean that God was tired and took rest, rather the meaning of completion.

God blessed the Sabbath and made it holy. Which means God wanted men to keep the Sabbath holy (different), too. ---This is the reason why we go to church on Sunday and worship God.

Men are easily broken and fragile because we are made of dirt. ‘Adam means dirt, soil.

Men are strong and valuable because of God’s life and God’s image in us.

The worst curses in the whole world is cursing others undervalued than animals.

Son of beach or brood of vipers, and so on….

Adam and Eve

This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth[b] and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, but streams[c] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. Then the Lord God formed a man[d] from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
