The Creation of the World

Genesis 1:1-25   Lesson 1

Key Verse 1:1

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth

The word genesis (Latin) means ‘birth’ or ‘origin’ or ‘beginning’ or ‘kick off’.

  1. Memorize 1:1. What does this verse mean? (Ps 90:2; 102:25-27) Why is it important for us to know that God created all things? (Isa 44:24) Read verse 2. What was the state of things before God spoke? What does it mean that the earth was formless, empty and dark? (Ps 104:30)

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

The beginning is the starting point of this world.

This beginning is different from ‘beginning’ in John 1:1.  …there is no starting point in John 1:1.

God is Elohim (plural)----proves the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit); Elohi: singular) Elohim means All powerful---Omnipotent, All-knowing---omniscient, and all-present---omnipresent.

El: means God:  Samuel (Shama Elohim: God hears)  Daniel (God judges) Immanuel (God with us)

Create: bara  :make something out of nothing with purpose…different from assemble.

Ps 90:2: Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world,
from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

25 In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 26 They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them and they will be discarded.
27 But you remain the same, and your years will never end.

Isiah 44:24 “This is what the Lord says— your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the Lord, the Maker of all things, who stretches out the heavens, who spreads out the earth by myself,

When we know that we are created by God, which means our life is God-purposed, we are really happy---We live purpose-driven life.

30 When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground.

Before God says, before God created, this world is empty, formless, and dark.

This shows the state of human hearts without God’s word---empty (lifeless), dark (lightless), formless.

God put order in this chaotic world.  God is the God of order.

The Spirit of God---rooah (Spirit or breath) Elohim---

The breath of life in Gen 2;7---neshama (breath of God with wisdom and character)

2. By what instrument did God create the world? (Heb 11:3) How many times do you find the phrases "and God said...and it was so"? What does this suggest about God? About his word? (Ps 33:6-9; Col 1:16; Jn 1:1-3)

God said….by God’s word this world was created.

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made their starry host by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea into jars[a]; he puts the deep into storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.

16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

The power of God’s word…God said…let there be light…and it was so….

Our God is God who speaks….talks, reasons, rebukes, promises…

Expresses his will by words.  Deliver his message by words.

3.  Describe what God did each day. What is the relationship between each day? Think about the character of God who created light. (2Co 4:6; Jn 1:4) How did this prepare an environment for animals and man? (Ps 104:14, Isa 45:18)

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”[a] made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

The light in the first day indicates Jesus Christ, who appeared as light in John 1 and 2 Co 4:6. This is why Jesus is called as the firstborn of all creation. (Col 1:15)

14 He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate—
bringing forth food from the earth:

18 For this is what the Lord says—he who created the heavens, he is God;
he who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited—he says: “I am the Lord, and there is no other.

Light in verse 3: or lights in verse 14: ma-or

God’s word is light for my path (Ps 119:105)---or light and darkness----or

4. Notice other repeated phrases: "And there was evening and … morning ..." "according to their kinds", "and God saw that it was good", etc. What do these phrases tell us about God? (Ps 19:1-6; 104:24-33) About the world he created?

Each creatures is created for God’s glory (Col 1:16)…to display the work of God (Jn 9:3)  God created all things which has each own uniqueness and merits.  God made everyone an individual, with his own special characteristics and qualities. He made each person for a purpose, Nothing in his creatures is useless. All things are created for purpose.

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.
They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice
[b] goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth.

24 How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 25 There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number—living things both large and small. 26 There the ships go to and fro, and Leviathan, which you formed to frolic there. 27 All creatures look to you
to give them their food at the proper time. 28 When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are satisfied with good things.
29 When you hide your face,
they are terrified; when you take away their breath,
they die and return to the dust. 30 When you send your Spirit,
 they are created,
and you renew the face of the ground. 31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in his works—32 he who looks at the earth, and it trembles, who touches the mountains, and they smoke. 33 I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
